Special courses

As well as the regular courses in General English and Conversation, we also offer Business English and IELTS preparation. In addition to these classes, we also run our own Skills and Well-Worded courses. Skills and Well-Worded are not always available every term so please check the timetable or contact us. For more information on our IELTS course click on 'English Exam Preparation'.

Skills

Skills is a special 6 hour course designed to develop the four main language skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. It is based around a Pre-Intermediate level coursebook and DVD, but students from Elementary to Intermediate levels are welcome to enrol. Supplementary materials are used according to the actual level of the class and the needs of the students.

Students watch and listen to conversations in natural contexts on the DVD. There are six episodes, each with several sections, in which important grammar points and vocabulary are presented. This language is then expanded on through supplementary reading and communicative activities. To improve speaking skills, there is a focus on pronunciation and intonation. At the end of each unit, students will be able to consolidate the new grammar and vocabulary that they have learned through writing assignments.

Well-Worded

If you don't know any grammar you can't say very much. If you don't know any words, you can't say anything.

Every student of English wants to know more words, and to use more of the words they 'know.' Well-Worded is all about learning and producing vocabulary. We train students in all the techniques needed to store and revise vocabulary, and then provide many different opportunities for using the vocabulary in realistic and memorable contexts. It's a must for any learner wanting to expand their active command of the language, and is especially useful for any student planning to take a Cambridge examination in the future.

Well-Worded uses all the latest methods to promote fast and effective learning of vocabulary. At the end of this course you will be a more fluent speaker, confident that you can communicate more effectively, both in everyday conversation and in more formal discussions. The result is that you will be able to say what you want to say.

Business English

Business English is one of ELT's areas of expertise. We have been running Business English courses in a variety of contexts since we began, for example: teaching executives at their company, guiding students toward a qualification in English for business purposes. The courses can lead to a qualification by students either taking the SEFIC (Spoken English for Industry and Commerce), or the BEC (Cambridge Business English Certificate).

Any student from Upper Intermediate and above can take Business English.

For those wishing to gain a recognised certificate in Business English there are two options. SEFIC (Spoken English for Industry and Commerce) run by LCCI, and BEC (Business English Certificate) run by Cambridge.

SEFIC - Spoken English for Industry and Commerce
The business examination is designed to test communication in business with tasks based on real business activity. Candidates must show they meet the spoken language requirements of business people today. These examinations are highly practical, informal one-to-one interviews that assess a candidate's ability to communicate in a business or work environment. At ELT we put forward students for one of two levels: Fourth Level (formerly Advanced Level) or Third Level (Intermediate).

  • FOURTH LEVEL: This tests a candidate's ability to display a high degree of fluency in discussing a range of business issues in English
  • THIRD LEVEL: This level tests the candidate's ability to discuss familiar business or professional topics in depth, in English
For more detailed information on the tests visit the examinations website: www.lccieb.com

BEC - Business English Certificate
The Cambridge Business English Certificates assess the ability to use English in a business context. The examinations test all four language skills - listening, speaking, reading and writing - at three language levels:

  • BEC Preliminary: Council of Europe Level 1
  • BEC Vantage: Council of Europe Level 2
  • BEC Higher: Council of Europe Level 3
